Excerpt ...practices them as instinctively and with as little compunction upon his own species as upon the deer and the wolf from whom he learned them. As a friend, no one will spring quicker to your aid, reckless of consequences, and fight with you to the last ditch; but fear of betrayal lies at the very bottom of his nature. His sleepless suspicion of ulterior motives is no more, no less, than a feral trait, inherited from a long line of forebears whose isolated lives were preserved only by incessant vigilance against enemies that stalked by night and struck without warning. Casual visitors learn nothing about the true character of the mountaineers. I am not speaking of personal but of race character

Before the mountains were dismembered for coal and the forests cut down to build houses somewhere else, before the culture was turned over to Al Capp and Fred Lasswell for trivializing and liberal media for demonizing, an observant visitor walked through southern Appalachia. Our Southern Highlanders Horace Kephart 9781463590925 Books Reviews
A great inside look at Appalachian life after the turn of the 20th century. Very entertaining and insightful. The author takes some license with his extrapolation when comparing the backgrounds, but it's a very eye opening view to a time past.
This book is very educational, and it is well written. Of particular interest is the author’s depiction of mountain life at the turn of the 20th century. It’s an excellent historical resource.
I have been wanting this book for a long time, I decided that to treat my self. This is a good read if you are interested in Appalachian culture. Kephart lived in the Smokey Mountain region for several years. This book gives insight into lives of the mountain people before the Great Smokey Mountain Park was established. It was very entertaining read.
Having lived in these beautiful mountains for nine years, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It helped me to both understand, and feel an affinity for, the people who had lived here for generations before I ever had the privilege of calling these mountains my home. Now, don't get me wrong. The Appalachian mountains are a struggle for any of us who do not (as was told to me too late) "bring their money with them". A truer sentiment, I have NEVER heard. This is a highly valuable read for anyone who lives in and loves the gentle beauty of the Southern Appalachians.

Though written a century ago, the author's wit and knowledge wrought from a classical education shine through, providing a rich and colorful window into the lives those who populated the Great Smoky Mountains at that time and before. He vividly describes the bear hunts he experienced with the remarkably hardy men, the lives of women and children, the historic source of the region's population, and more things of interest than I can describe here. All is not peaches and cream -- while there is much to admire in these folks, there also is a dark side well described by a person who lived among them and saw it all first hand, If you have an interest in the Appalachian area and its people, get this book. I doubt there is any other that will provide a look into their lives and culture more successfully.
Written just as commercial extraction industries came to Appalachia, this well written book brings together a description of a segment of our national history oft-neglected and more often distorted. As Federal parks and forests have replaced the subsistence farmers of this book, Kephart’s description of the terrain becomes more pertinent. Altogether a very good read. Would recommend the edition. Although missing the illustrations, the ability to readily reference the author’s vocabulary and historical references adds much to the understanding of his 19th century context. Also the University of Texas has on line late 19th century U. S. G. S. topographic maps that add much to the story.
